Earth Day | Caleb Baker

Earth Day, held on April 22nd, was an idea that started with Senator Gaylord Nelson. After witnessing the results of an oil spill, he announced his idea for a day to help educate the nation about threats to the environment. He drew on several ideas to implement it, and one of those was the idea of getting students involved. By drawing on the resources of colleges and schools of America, he was able to make the first Earth Day in 1970 large enough to attract television attention.
Rather than attempt to form a large organization, Senator Nelson suggested that having many smaller groups to focus on local efforts would produce better results. Though there is an Earth Day Network that attempts to publicize and promote efforts, much of the activity has remained local.
As Earth day comes, join other students in volunteering or just take a few steps to reduce your strain on the environment.
