As a kid, your mom always made you write thank you notes
after your birthday and Christmas, or whenever you received gifts from
someone. They were a chore, they were
annoying, but they mattered (or so your mom said).
As an adult, thank you notes are the way to tell each other,
“I’m thinking of you and am grateful for your thought of me, too.” They are appropriate in private, personal
relationships and in professional, work settings as well. Thank you notes tell the person you are
following up and being professional enough to write out a handwritten thank you
note for them to keep. You put thought
and effort into something for them, after they put thought and effort into
you.
It is important to send these because people appreciate the
gesture and it could get you brownie points if you’re interviewing for a job!
