On Tuesday, March 8th, North Carolina became the 30th state in the U.S. to ban same sex marriage. However, the amendment to the state’s constitution not only bans marriage between individuals of the same sex, but also civil unions or any other type of domestic partnership. The fact that it was passed isn’t surprising to most, but the margin by which it was passed does surprise. The amendment was passed 61 to 39 percent. Mary Curtis from the Washington Post, had thought it would be much closer.
Many large cities in North Carolina, such as Raleigh, Ashville, and Charlotte, were convinced the amendment was a “bad idea,” that was too broad with its language and too wide in its scope.
Also last week, Obama took a supportive stance on gay marriage. With opponent Mitt Romney on the opposite side of the debate, how will this affect the coming election? We will soon find out.
