The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is catching fire all across America. The young adult books are a popular series amongst readers of all ages. When one of my friends from class gave me this book to read, I thought it was going to be some type of crazy “Twilight” fad of make believe magic warriors gallivanting off to find some secret treasure nonsense.
When I actually sat down and took time to actually read the books, they were actually better than I expected. The series is actually about a sci-fi future world in which 13 districts from North America all have to participate in the “Hunger Games.” The Hunger Games is a live televised barbaric event in which participants of the thirteen districts have to fight to the death. The obstacles and rules of the games are manipulated by an evil government called The Capital. The players participating in the game are all young kids who are 12 to 18 years old. Amongst the players in this game are Katniss Everdeen, a 16 year old girl and a boy Peeta Mellark both from District 12. During the course of the “games” Katniss and Peeta rebel against the Capitol and the socialistic rules and regulations that they have placed for all thirteen districts as well as their orders of forcing kids to fight to-the-death every year.
This series was one of the most exciting books I have read all year. It is no wonder as to why to so many kids, even adults here all across the campus are waving about it. Just the other day, I saw a copy of one of the books, Mocking Jay in my TA’s office. Once the movie came out, I knew that I had to see it. The movie wasn’t as bad as I thought. The characters that played Katniss and Peeta were perfect. It was nice to see Katniss’s signature “bow and arrow” moves during the whole competition. However, if you are a die-hard fan of the books, it may not live up to all of your expectations. The movie followed the book to a relative degree; there were a few essential parts that were missing. But if you happen to be a movie-goer who just wants to see a good show, then the movie has all the special effects and even a romantic kiss that a person could hope for. So, watch the movie while you still can.
